CORVALLIS, OR— Utah Gymnastics' season ends at the Regional Final after a tight race for the top two spots to advance to the NCAA Championship.
The Red Rocks battled hard, but their 197.500 was not enough to top UCLA (197.725) and Minnesota (197.625) to advance out of the Corvallis Regional Final, ending a record for never missing Nationals at 49 years.
Â
While Utah does not advance as a team, it will have three athletes in
Avery Neff (all-around),
Ana Padurariu (beam), and
Ella Zirbes (floor) representing the program as individuals at Nationals on April 16.
Â
The race was on out of the gate in rotation one with Minnesota snagging first with a 49.450 on floor, UCLA taking second with a 49.350 on vault, and Utah and Alabama tied third with a 49.325 after competing on bars and beam respectively.
Makenna Smith set the foundation with a 9.825, followed by a 9.875 from
Ashley Glynn and
Ana Padurariu.
Avery Neff closed out bars for the Utes strong with a 9.950 to keep Utah .025 behind second place.
The competitiveness didn't end in the second rotation with Minnesota and UCLA holding onto first (98.825) and second place (98.750), while Bama took sole possession of third (98.675), and Utah sliding to fourth (98.625) after posting a 49.300 on beam.
Elizabeth Gantner and
Abbi Ryssman were solid at the front of the lineup earning 9.85s and
Camie Winger added a 9.800 as the anchor. Neff and Padurariu earned the high scores in the back end with a pair of 9.90s to keep the Red Rocks in the game.
The third rotation saw a shakeup in the hierarchy with Utah jumping to first (148.150) after a monster 49.525 on floor, while UCLA and Minnesota tied for second (148.100), and Alabama taking third (147.800).
Zoe Johnson contributed a 9.85 followed by a 9.90 from Neff and triple 9.925s from Zirbes, Smith, and
Sage Curtis in the back half of the lineup.
The standings took one more turn in the final rotation after the Red Rocks earned a 49.350 on vault (197.500) putting them solidly in third place. UCLA (197.725) and Minnesota (197.625) ultimately prevailed with Alabama taking fourth (197.175).
Utah posted two 9.90s from Zirbes and Neff along with a pair of 9.80s from Johnson and Glynn. Smith had the high score on the final event, drilling a 9.95 in the middle of the lineup.
