University of Utah gymnasts Shannon Bowles and Theresa Kulikowski were named to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-District At-Large first team and Ute skiers Jernej Bukovec and Petra Svet were named to the second and third teams, respectively.
The four are now eligible for the Academic All-America team, which will be announced on June 13.
Bowles, a nine-time All-America senior, helped Utah to a fourth-place finish at the 2002 NCAA Championships by placing sixth in the all-around, third on the floor exercise and seventh on the balance beam. She recently was awarded an NCAA post-graduate scholarship and was chosen as the alternate speaker at Commencement ceremonies. Bowles has a 3.813 cumulative grade-point average in exercise and sport science and psychology.
Kulikowski, a three-time NCAA champion and 12-time All-American, placed third in the all-around and on the balance beam, fifth on the uneven bars and 11th on the floor exercise at the 2002 NCAA Championships. A junior in NCAA eligibility, Kulikowski graduated in May with a perfect 4.0 cumulative GPA in exercise and sport science. Next year, while she finishes her collegiate athletics career, she will work towards a graduate degree.
Bukovec is a three-time All-America junior for the Ute ski team. He placed seventh in the slalom and ninth in the giant slalom at the 2002 NCAA Championships to help Utah to a third-place finish. Bukovec, a business major, has a 3.654 GPA.
Svet, the 2001 NCAA slalom champion and a two-time All-American, placed third in the slalom in 2002 for Utah's third-place team. The senior business major graduated with a 3.702 GPA.
