SALT LAKE CITY - Bill Bean and Deb Willardson, members of the University of Utah athletics training staff, and Richard Spencer, a clinical instructor in the U. athletic training program, were recently honored in an award ceremony held by the Utah Athletic Trainers Association.
Bean, the Utes' director of sports medicine, was inducted into the organization's Hall of Fame. He has worked at the U. for the past 28 years. Bean has also been an Army medical officer, an assistant trainer at Washington State University, and the head trainer for the Utah Stars of the ABA during his career.
Willardson, who has been with the U. for the past 29 years, was named the 2003 Utah Collegiate Athletic Trainer of the Year. Willardson began as a graduate assistant at the U. and later became the first female athletic trainer in school history. She is now the Utes' associate director of sports medicine.
Spencer, who is the head trainer at Highland High School in addition to teaching athletic training students at the U., was named the 2003 Utah High School Athletic Trainer of the Year. Spencer received his degree from the University of Utah in 1991.
