SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah athletics marketing staff, along with the Ken Garff Automotive Group and Hogi Yogi restaurants, has been honored by the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA) with the Gold Award for "Best Single-Day Football Attendance Promotion" in Category 3.
The award was presented for the Ken Garff/Hogi Yogi ticket promotion for the Utah vs. California game on Sept. 11, 2003. That game drew 46,768 fans to set the Utah all-time single-game attendance record. The promotions for the game included high school assemblies with head coach Urban Meyer and a halftime performance by the giant BMX biker team. The Thursday night game was televised nationally by ESPN.
During the 2003 season, highlighted by the Utes capturing the Mountain West Conference championship and winning the AXA Liberty Bowl, Utah set a new record with a season average home attendance of 41,478.
