COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.-The Mountain West Conference announced today that it placed 18 student-athletes on the 2002-03 Verizon Academic All-America Teams. Leading the way was Utah with six student-athletes being recognized, followed by four from Colorado State, two from Air Force, New Mexico and Wyoming, and one from BYU and San Diego State.
The Verizon Academic All-America Teams program recognizes student-athletes who have succeeded on the field and in the classroom. To be eligible for the team, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher (on a 4.0 scale), be in their second year of participation at the school and be a varsity starter or key contributor to their team.
Ute gymnast Theresa Kulikowski highlighted the academic year by earning Verizon Academic All-America At-Large Team Member of the Year for the second year in a row. Other Utes earning Academic All-America honors were Brooks Bahr, football; Maren Harper, soccer; Brooke LoBue, track and field; Jernej Bukovec (skiing) and Kaisorn Chaichana (tennis).
