Mary Bowman is the University of Utah's senior associate athletics director for student-athlete support services and the senior woman administrator (SWA).
Her supervisory duties in student-athlete support services include the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), the Life Skills program and the Student-Athlete Wellness team. She also serves as the administrator for the athletics department's academic services, athletic training, strength and conditioning for the "Olympic" sports and sport nutrition. She is currently the sport supervisor for volleyball, soccer, skiing and softball, and previously held the same role with the track and field and baseball teams.
Bowman has had a number of NCAA appointments, including the Softball Selection Committee, the Softball Rules Committee and the Ski Committee. She was an NCAA site representative for softball for eight years and was the tournament director for the 2014 NCAA Ski Championships.
The Iowa native was hired in 1996 as Utah's first director of student-athlete support services. She was promoted to assistant athletics director in 1999 and was named Utah's SWA in 2003. In 2004, she became an associate athletics director and in 2011 was promoted to senior associate A.D.
Before joining the Utah athletics staff, Bowman was a teacher, coach and counselor at the high school level for 20 years in both Colorado and Salt Lake City. In 1977, she was named the Colorado Volleyball Coach of the Year while coaching at Eagle Valley High School. She later coached volleyball and was an assistant girls' basketball coach at Salt Lake City's East High School.
Bowman graduated with a bachelor's degree in secondary education from Northern Colorado, where she played on the varsity basketball team. She earned a master's degree in educational psychology from Utah in 1988. She will receive her master gardener certification through the Utah State extension in November.
Bowman and her late husband John have two sons: J.J. and Chris.
