We are committed to the holistic development of student-athletes, and will provide the education and resources that will support the development of life skills vital to a student-athletes success at and beyond the U. (Our What)
Student Belonging and Success focuses on four key areas: personal development, career development, leadership development, and community engagement.
Personal Development
New Student-Athlete Orientation/Welcome: Program for ALL First-Year student-athletes and their families. Students and their families are provided useful information, Q&A opportunities, and hear from administrators, staff, and current/ former student-athletes. The program is conducted in the Summer and Fall.
Transitional Programs for New & Graduating Student-Athletes: Students new to the U meet to discuss college transition topics with SBS and Campus/Community Partners to build relationships and acclimate to the Athletic Department, University of Utah campus and Salt Lake City community. Senior and Graduate Students meet with SBS and Campus/Community Partners to discuss the transition from student to employee or even entrepreneur.
Additional Programs: Alcohol/ Drug Education, Gambling, Social-Media, Consent/Healthy Relationships, Belonging & Multiculturalism, Athletic Identity, and Financial Literacy (Budgeting, Saving, Credit, Taxes, etc.…)
Crimson Carpet Awards and Family On Three Bash: The marquee end of year social-celebratory event, driven by the Crimson Council (SAAC) in conjunction with SBS. The Awards showcase the many accomplishments of Utah student-athletes academically, athletically, and in the community throughout the academic year, and the Family On Three Bash is a end of year opportunity for community among athletes and to show appreciation and gratitude to graduating Seniors.
Career Development
UTE Academy: Programs designed to prepare student-athletes for life during and after the U. Programs are offered in each semester to optimize schedules and commitments within their sport. Examples of programs: Resume and Cover Letter Construction, Internship/Job Search Strategies, LinkedIn, and NIL/Personal Brand.
Additional Programs: Career/Major Exploration, Professionalism, Elevator Pitch, Grad School Admissions, Personal Statements, and HR 101
Leadership Development
Crimson Council (SAAC): The voice of Utah student- athletes. All teams have at least two nominated representatives by their Head Coach. The group meets monthly to discuss community service initiatives, health and wellness issues, academic needs, NCAA & Conference Initiatives, professional development, Family OnThree games/events, etc. There are 4 Sub- Committees: Community Engagement/Events, unmUTEd, UTAH Group, Social-Media/Promotions. (Representatives must join at least one sub-committee.)
Additional Programs: Team workshops (Effective Communication, Conflict Management & Resolution, Values & Beliefs, Chemistry & Cohesion, etc.…). Conference and NCAA program nominations and selections.
Community Engagement
Working with local and national organizations SBS helps to coordinate and provide opportunities for Utah student-athletes to be involved in the campus and greater community at-large. Examples of engagement during the school year: Granite & Salt Lake City School District, Bennion Center, Lauren McCluskey Foundation, Primary Children’s Hospital, Trunk-or-Treat, Ronald McDonald House, Sammy’s Buddy Program, Special Olympics, and Utah Food Bank.
