David Evans begins his first season with the Runnin’ Utes program after joining Craig Smith’s staff in June of 2024 as an assistant coach.
Evans comes to Salt Lake City after a successful career at the prep level the last decade at various stops.
He most recently served as the program director at Real Salt Lake Academy (2020-23) where he oversaw a nationally ranked team that went 67-21 overall during his tenure. While with RSL Academy, Evans recruited student-athletes from over 20 different countries with over 60 players in the program. In addition to his role as the director, Evans also managed fundraising for the program and brought in over $40,000 annually.
Prior to leading RSL Academy, Evans served as the head coach at Wasatch Academy (2018-20) and compiled an overall record of 51-6 with back-to-back appearances at the GEICO National Tournament. In his first season at the helm (2018-19), the Tigers were ranked No. 5 in the country before being ranked No. 2 in the nation his second year. Evans was selected to coach the Jordan Brand game in Chicago during the 2018-19 campaign. In his two seasons there, over 20 student-athletes moved on to play basketball at the collegiate or NBA level.
Evans also served as the head coach at Lone Peak High School from 2015-18. The Knights went 66-13 overall in his three seasons at LPHS – culminating with a state championship in 2018 after a runner-up finish in 2017.
He spent the 2014-15 season as a player/coach for the Plymouth Raiders of the BBL League. While in the UK, Evans averaged 14.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists as a player while also serving as a player development coach for the Raiders Academy and pro team.
Evans got his first taste of coaching in the collegiate ranks at his alma mater, Division II BYU-Hawaii, for three season (2011-14) under head coach Ken Wagner.
He was a standout at BYU-Hawaii, finishing as the Seasiders’ all-time leader in scoring with 2,053 career points and was also the school’s only 2,000-point scorer. His senior year (1999-2000) saw him lead all division with a 27.9 points average before closing out his career as the program’s leader in field-goals made (748) and the single-game points leader (48 points).
The California native was also a three-time All-American and is the school’s only NCAA post-graduate scholarship recipient after BYU-Hawaii phased out its athletics department in 2017.
Evans earned his bachelor’s degree in exercise and sports science at BYU-Hawaii (’00) before obtaining his master’s in sports coaching from the United States Sports Academy in 2004.
He and his wife, Amy Combe, have a daughter, Chloe, and four sons, Jonas, Trey, Jens and Rivers.
