A former Utah captain and All-Mountain West selection, Brandon Burton returned to the Utes in 2026 as a wide receivers assistant.

Most recently, he played a key role in launching Texas Sports Academy, an innovating K-8 and high school program that integrates athletic development, academic mastery and personal wellness.

Burton brings both coaching and professional playing experience to Utah, including previous time on the Utes’ staff as a defensive assistant and graduate assistant from 2016–19. During that span, he worked with Utah’s secondary while assisting with practice planning, film breakdown and game-day adjustments, helping the program produce multiple NFL Draft selections and rank among the Pac-12’s top defensive units.

Burton later gained additional collegiate experience as defensive backs coach and defensive pass game coordinator at Texas Permian Basin from 2019-22. Burton also coached both the kick and return units, in addition to helping the 2021 UTPB team finish second in the Lone Star Conference in interceptions and third in pass efficiency defense.

In addition, he coached in the Alliance of American Football during 2019, coaching the defensive backs with the Arizona Hotshots.

A former Utah standout, Burton played cornerback for the Utes before being selected in the 2011 NFL Draft. He spent five seasons in the NFL with the Minnesota Vikings, Buffalo Bills and Indianapolis Colts. Burton was a member of Utah’s 2008 undefeated season and Sugar Bowl championship team and earned All-Mountain West honors during his collegiate career.
