Utes Close out Utah/Weber State Spring Classic

Utah competes in Ogden for second day of competition.

OGDEN, Utah –  The Utah track and field team closed out the Utah/Weber State Spring Classic on Saturday with solid performances to cap off the weekend in Ogden, Utah.

"Today was another solid day and was productive for our group," head coach Kyle Kepler said.

Two freshmen competed in the 200-meter dash on the second day of competition and placed in the top-10. Holly Stallman placed fifth with a time 25.47 seconds, while Brooke Martin followed in sixth place with a time of 25.59 seconds.

Along with the 200, Martin also competed in the 400-meter hurdles at Stewart Stadium. Martin placed fourth with a time of 1:03.55.

"Brooke had trouble over the first hurdle in the 400H, but then recovered nicely," Kepler stated.

In the 1500-meter run, freshman Sarah Newton and junior Megan Perkins placed 12th and 13th, respectively. Newton finished the race with a time of 4:54.08 and Perkins finished with a time of 4:55.63. Freshman Ashley Licata placed 18th with a time of 4:58.80, senior Becky Sarmiento finished 19th in a time of 5:00.30, and Anna Busatto competed unattached and finished in 20th with a time of 5:02.13.

"It was a very savvy race by the 1500 girls in the first heat (Licata, Sarmiento, Busatto). We had nice efforts by the gals in heat four (Newton and Perkins), who moved up an event for the first time," Kepler said.

Junior Shaylen Crook competed in the 5000-meter run and finished in sixth place with a time of 18:42.80.

In the high jump, sophomore Eliza Hansen and freshman Piper Wehrli finished in a tie for seventh place. Hansen and Wehrli both cleared a mark of 5 feet, 1.75 inches (1.57m). This mark was a personal best for Wehrli.

Utah is back in action next weekend when the team heads to California to compete in three different meets. The Utes will compete at the Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut, Calif; Pacific Coast Intercollegiate in Long Beach, Calif; and the Brian Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif. Action will begin on Thursday, April 13, and conclude on Saturday, April 15.
