Salt Lake City - Utah had four players selected as members of the inaugural All-Mountain West Conference Volleyball Teams, Tues., Nov. 23. Sophomore McKelle Stilson was a first-team (MB) selection.
Stilson leads Utah in kills and blocks, averaging 3.78 kpg and 1.27 bpg. Stilson posted a career-high 31 kills in Utah?s MWC Tourney win over San Diego State. Senior setter Graciela Torres-Lopez and sophomore outside hitter Alisa Geddes were second-team picks, while junior Brook Barton was named the second-team defensive specialist of the year. Torres-Lopes is Utah all-time assists leader with 5,005 total assists. She racked up her 5,000th assist in the MWC Tourney match-up with San Diego State. Alisa Geddes leads Utah in digs, averaging 3.18 dpg. Geddes also posts 3.06 kills per game. Brook Barton posted a career-high 18 digs vs. San Diego State in Utah?s opening match of the MWC Tourney.
Sophomore middle blocker Nina Puikkonen headlined as the first-ever All-Mountain West Conference Volleyball Team as the unanimous choice by the coaches for player-of-the-year honors. The coaches selected Colorado State?s Tom Hilbert as Coach of the Year. BYU?s Sunny Tonga garnered freshman-of-the-year accolades.
Joining Puikkonen on the first team is Cougar teammate senior outside hitter Caroline Bower, while senior Anna-Lena Smith is the first-team setter-of-the-year. Colorado State senior outside hitter Catie Vagneur and sophomore middle blocker Angela Knopf also earned first-team recognition, while senior Kristen Vance was selected the first-team defensive specialist of the year. Wyoming junior Melody Friehauf completed the first-team selections.
Colorado State sophomore setter Allison Peckham was chosen the second-team setter of the year and was joined on the second team by sophomore outside hitter Courtney Cox, giving CSU five total picks. BYU senior outside hitter Mari Carpenter brings the Cougars? total all-conference selections to five with her second-team selection. Air Force senior middle blocker Summer Koons and UNLV senior outside hitter Angie Sylvas complete the second-team selections.
