SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team trampled Air Force in a 12-1 victory today. The Utes scored 12 runs on 16 hits with no errors. It ties Utah's season record 15-15 and boosts the Utes WAC record to 3-7. Air Force scored its solo run in the bottom of the first inning.
The Utes came back to shut down the Falcons for the remaining eight innings. In the top of the second, Utah began its scoring streak when designated hitter Nate Weese walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on an error by the Falcons catcher. He was singled in by Jared Larsen. Two Ute walks and a single by Ryan Hilts brought in Utah's second run.
In the fourth, Mike Goff and Hilts singled and were doubled in by freshman Adam Castleton giving the Utes a 4-1 lead. The Utes dominated the plate in the fifth scoring six runs. Weese doubled and was singled in by Ryan Johnerson. Johnerson stole second and was singled in by Goff. Shortstop Jake Shortino doubled and Hilts singled in Goff and Shortino. Castleton cleared the bases with a home run, when he slammed his sixth of the season over the right field fence. The string of runs catapulted the Utes to a 10-1 lead.
Utah closed the scoring with two runs in the eighth inning. Johnerson reached first on a Falcon error and scored on a two-run homer by Mike Wood, his second of the season. The Utes and the Falcons continue the series tomorrow, April 2 at 2:00 p.m.
