SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah baseball team dropped a 10-3 contest to Baylor in the middle game of the series Friday night on Charlie Monfort Field at America First Ballpark.
Â
Jake Long went 3-for-5 at the plate.
Matt Flaharty was 2-for-4 with a double in the seventh inning and a two-run single in the eighth.
Cal Miller also walked to extend his on-base streak to 26 consecutive games, the longest by a Utah freshman since at least the 2002 season.
Â
Flaharty and
Cameron Gurney teamed up on several nice defensive plays throughout the game.
Â
Baylor opened the scoring with a run apiece in the first two innings to jump out to an early 2-0 lead. In the top of the third, Baylor's Brady Janusek hit a deep fly ball that looked to be headed for the solo homer to the right field berm, but a leaping
Jet Gilliam kept the ball in the ballpark for a triple. Starting pitcher
Payton Riske got a groundout from the next batter to end the inning as the score remained 2-0.
Â
The Utes got on the board in the fourth, sparked by singles from Long and
Daniel Arambula. A double play allowed Long to score from third base and get the Utes back within a run as the score moved to 2-1.
Â
But Baylor would go on to score eight unanswered runs over the next four innings. The Utes had opportunities in the meantime but couldn't quite find the timely hit as the home squad finished 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position.
Â
Utah did put on a nice two-out rally in the eighth, netting two runs after a pair of fly balls began the inning. Gurney, Miller and
Jet Gilliam each walked to load up the bases with Flaharty due up next at the plate. Flaharty drove the ball to center field for a single, scoring Gurney and Miller and putting Gilliam on third base. Baylor would induce a fly out to end the inning.
