FORT WORTH, Texas – Seven different Utah players contributed a hit but the Utes were defeated by TCU in a 4-3 ballgame on Sunday in the series finale at Lupton Stadium.
Â
Matt Flaharty came through with an RBI single that not only gave Utah the game's first run but also extended Flaharty's hitting streak to six games.
Cal Miller singled, worked a walk and scored, reaching base for the 23
rd consecutive game. It is the longest on-base streak by a Utah freshman since 2011.
Â
Seth Graham-Pippin received the loss for the Utes in a five-inning start, before
Ryan Kittredge,
Cameron Nielson and
Kaden Soder each saw action in relief. Overall for the weekend, the pitching staff allowed only three walks.
Â
Defensively, the Utes played error-free baseball the entire series.
Â
Utah (24-22, 11-16 Big 12) plated the game's first two runs in the second inning, beginning with a one-out poke from Flaharty that rolled through the left side and brought in Miller from second base. Then later in the inning, a delayed double steal allowed Flaharty to sneak home and evade the tag of TCU catcher Nolan Traeger for the 2-0 lead.
Â
The home half of the second saw the Frogs put up a three-spot. Along the way,
Jet Gilliam came up with a diving catch in right center field that took away extra bases and instead limited the Frogs to a sac fly.
Â
The clubs traded a run apiece in the third inning, including a leadoff solo home run from
Daniel Arambula that traveled 362 feet and sailed over the left field fence; it was his sixth big fly of the season. TCU would net a run in its half of the third as the home team pulled back in front 4-3.
Â
Utah's best chance at another crooked number came in the fifth when the Utes loaded the bases with one out. But the Frogs induced a ground ball to start a double play and get out of the inning.
Â
Nielson came on from the bullpen in the sixth inning with runners at the corners and two outs, striking out Cole Cramer to get Utah back to the bats with the score still 4-3. Soder took to the mound in a similar situation in the seventh with runners at second and third, but fanned Noah Franco as the game headed to the eighth.
Â
The Utes were retired in order in the eighth and ninth innings as the series came to a close.
