PHILADELPHIA – The Minnesota Twins selected University of Utah right-handed pitcher
Colter McAnelly on Sunday in the 2026 MLB Draft. McAnelly was selected in the 18
th round with the No. 527 overall pick.
A native of Cheyenne, Wyoming, McAnelly is the 82
nd draft pick in recorded Utah baseball history and second of this year's draft; he follows outfielder
Jake Long who was taken by the Los Angeles Angels earlier today in the 13
th round.
All-time, he is the fifth Utah draft selection by by the Twins. Minnesota selected
Merit Jones in both the 2024 and 2025 drafts.
McAnelly has been at Utah for the last three seasons with 42 appearances on the mound and 37 starts. He has a 12-15 career record with a 4.99 ERA and 207 strikeouts—with his strikeout total ranking fourth all-time in Utah history. McAnelly was the team's Friday night starter in 2025 and '26, after holding down the Sunday spot late in the 2024 season.
He made 13 starts as a junior in 2026, totaling a 3-7 record in 67.1 innings pitched. It included a victory for McAnelly in the inaugural game played inside America First Ballpark, where he tossed six innings and allowed two hits in a combined shutout of Grand Canyon. He also left in line for the win vs. Arizona on March 13 but received a no-decision despite seven innings of one-hit, two-run ball.
McAnelly was lauded as a first-team All-Big 12 selection as a sophomore in 2025, going 4-4 in the Friday night spot with a 3.79 ERA and 92.2 innings pitched. During the regular season, McAnelly led the Big 12 in innings pitched while ranking fifth in strikeouts (92) and seventh in opponent batting average (.236). His 92 strikeouts were the most by a Utah pitcher since 2016 and fourth all-time for a single season. For his efforts, McAnelly was listed by D1Baseball.com as the No. 47-ranked starting pitcher on the site's late-season national awards.
Late in his freshman season of 2024, McAnelly transitioned into the Sunday spot in the starting rotation, making six of his 10 starts in that role. He finished the year 5-4, helping the Utes to a series win over Washington and a sweep over UCLA.
Prior to Utah, McAnelly attended Cheyenne East High School and played under head coach Ty Lain with the Cheyenne Post 6 Sixers. Perfect Game ranked McAnelly, a three-time state champion, as the No. 1 player in Wyoming for the Class of 2023. As a high school junior, took the mound for the state championship game and delivered a 19-strikeout performance.
