FORT WORTH, Texas – Utah Baseball was defeated by TCU 3-1 on Saturday inside Lupton Stadium. The Utes and Horned Frogs will wrap up the three-game series on Sunday in a noon MT first pitch.
Â
The Utah pitching staff combined for seven strikeouts between
Payton Riske (3) and
Demitri Diamant (4) and the duo did not walk any batters in the game. It marked the third time this season that Utah did not allow a walk (intentional walks excluded).
Â
Riske (4-3) was responsible for three runs but took a no-hitter into the fourth inning and handed the ball off to Diamant midway through the sixth. Diamant surrendered just a single and a hit batsman during his three innings of relief.
Â
Unfortunately for Utah (24-21, 11-15 Big 12), TCU starter Lance Davis was just a little better and held the Utes to a run on six hits and two walks. He went the distance for a complete game.
Â
Cameron Gurney homered for the fifth time this season, putting Utah on the board with a solo shot in the fourth inning.
Cal Miller was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk to reach base safely for the 22
nd straight game, while
Matt Flaharty went 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to five straight contests.
Â
Riske did a nice job to bounce back from a two-on, nobody out situation in the second inning. He followed by inducing an infield fly pop up, followed by a fly ball and a strikeout to keep the game scoreless.
Â
The Utes broke the ice with Gurney's solo homer in the fourth inning. With one out, Gurney stepped into the box and clubbed the first pitch 412 feet and over the batter's eye in center field.
Â
But the Frogs were quick to equalize, clubbing a solo shot of their own in the home half of the fourth. TCU pulled in front with a two-out RBI single in the fifth inning, but the Utes avoided further damage after a pitch-clock strikeout ended the inning and sent the game to the sixth inning with the Frogs ahead 2-1.
Â
Diamant came on in the sixth with TCU now holding a 3-1 lead. He faced runners on first and second with nobody out, but struck out three straight batters and silenced an offense that had just strung together three hits on three pitches.
Â
Utah brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning after Flaharty singled to center field, but that would be all for the Utes as the game came to an end.
