SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's tennis team (1-2) hunted down Idaho State for its first win of the season, 8-1. Junior Megan Payne spearheaded the Ute charge earning her seventh consecutive singles win on the season by defeating Denise Fernandez, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 2 singles.
Payne teamed up with Molly Sanderson at No. 1 doubles to down the Bengal team of Kakulia-Swan, 8-2. Doubles was the strength for Utah. Irini Kotoglou and Heidi Thomas won 8-3 at No. 2 doubles over Vasterling-Fernandez, while Linn Ronnberg and Brooke Wilkinson throttled Endow-Northrup, 8-2.
At the No. 3 singles position, Freshman Hillaree Hawkins cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Laura Swan, despite bronchitis, which consequently kept her out of the doubles lineup. Head Coach John Tsumas was ecstatic about the young teams performance.
"It would have been easy for us to have a let down tonight, coming off of a tough weekend of play last week and knowing we beat up on ISU last year, but I was impressed with our concentration," said Tsumas. "I like our youthful enthusiasm, the girls are fighting. We're competing well. We just need to keep adjusting and improving."
