DURHAM, N.H. - Shannon Bowles had to share the thunder in her homecoming with teammate Theresa Kulikowski, but between the two of them, they made sure the No. 3 ranked Utes were victorious against the University of New Hampshire. The Utes overcame a season-best score from the Wildcats to take a 196.175-194.975 win.
Bowles, of nearby Lee, N.H., scored a 39.10 in the all-around, including career-tying marks on bars (9.90) and floor (9.875). But two falls on vault put her out of the running for the all-around, which was won by Kulikowski. Kulikowski's 39.75 score tied her for the fourth-best mark in school history and the best since 1995 when Suzanne Metz set the (then) NCAA record with a 39.95. It was freshman's fifth straight all-around victory. She became the first Ute this year to win the all-around and all four events in a meet, although she shared the vault title with teammates Denise Jones and Angelika Schatton, each with a 9.85.
Outside some highlight film caliber routines by Bowles and Kulikowski, the Utes were not particularly sharp in picking up their 11th victory against one loss. After sailing through the first two events, scoring a 49.375 on bars and a 49.075 on vault, bobbles and even falls became the norm in the second half. Two Utes skidded on the floor mat, with Jones skidding all the way to the ground. But Kulikowski (9.925), Bowles (9.875) and Ashley Kever (9.825) pushed Utah to a 49.175 score.
The slips turned to falls on the beam, where where Jones and Deidra Graham both fell. But Kulikowski and Bowles made a large Ute contingent breathe easier and put the meet away as the final competitors of the night. Kulikowski scored a perfect 10.0 on the beam, her third perfect score of the year, and Bowles finished Utah's set with a 9.925.
