The No. 4 Utah gymnastics team started out like gangbusters, hit a bump on beam, then recovered on floor to defeat No. 3 Louisiana State 196.375-195.150 in Salt Lake City, Friday. The win preserved Utah's national best regular season home court win streak, which now stands at 148 straight going into Monday's meet with Florida.
Led by Theresa Wolf and Denise Jones, the Utes came out red hot against the team that had just moved ahead of them in the rankings three days earlier. Wolf, who eventually finished second in the all-around to Jones, closed the best vault series of the year for Utah with a career-best 9.90. Utah rang up a season-best 49.10 on the vault before a raucous crowd of 10,515 that gave a unified wolf howl before all of Wolf's routines.
Through two events, it was a night of season and career bests for the Utes. In addition to Wolf's winning vault, Angelika Schatton broke her own record with a 9.825. On bars, two Utes had personal bests: Jones and Theresa Kulikowski, whose 9.925 routines tied them for first with Angie Leonard. The Utes posted a 49.50, its highest score on any event this year, on the bars.
But for the second straight meet, beam caused trouble for Utah. After Wolf led off with a 9.750, two of the next three Utes fell and Kulikowski, the nation's fourth-ranked all-arounder, barely saved a spill. Shannon Bowles got Utah back on course in the end, with a winning 9.95 routine.
Despite the errors on beam, Utah held a seven tenths lead going into the floor exercise, which was fortunate given the nation's top ranked beam team was heading to that event. Back into the groove, Utah reeled off a 49.30 on floor, tying its best score of the year on that event. Kulikowski picked up her second win of the night and her team-best 12th win of the season on the mat, scoring a 9.925.
Jones won her first all-around of the year with a career-best 39.45. Close on her heels was Wolf (39.225), who also recorded a career all-around high. Kulikowski finished third with a 39.125.
