BUFFALO, N.Y. - Jeff Simonich became the first Ute track and field All-American since 1992 by placing eighth in the 5,000 meter race at the NCAA Track and Field Championships in Buffalo, N.Y., June 3-6. Simonich, a junior, shattered his own school record in the 5,000 meters, clocking a 13:49.94. The time, which broke his previous mark by four seconds, also qualified him for the upcoming USA National Championships. Simonich was the sixth American to cross the finish line. The last Ute to win All-America honors in track and field was Traci Olsen, who placed sixth in the high jump at the 1992 NCAA Championships. A native of Tooele, Utah, Simonich ran the second-fasted 5,000 meter time ever by a Utahn--surpassed only by Olympian Ed Eyestone.
