The University of Utah track and field team is preparing for the Mt. SAC Relays April 16-17 in Walnut, California and the Mark Faldmo Invitational April 17 in Logan, Utah, after the weekend bus accident that injured nine members of the team and four staff members.
"This was not a good way to start off the season," said Head Coach Mike Jones after the accident forced the team to miss the first outdoor meet of the year, the Bob Gibb Invitational in Boise, Idaho. "It is one less competition and one less opportunity for the kids to perform and develop their skills. But they are a pretty resilient group. They'll bounce back to salvage the year and we should have a pretty good season."
The Mt. SAC Relays is one of the largest outdoor track meets in the western United States where only the elite compete. "There is more talent there than you will find anywhere," says Jones. Competing for the Utes are Larry Stanley and Eric Vernon in the steeple chase while Adam Stark, Phil Stoddard, Jeff Simonich, Dane Miller, and Chris Merkley run in the 5,000 meters. Travis Hildebrand is doubtful for this invitational due to the fractured nose and knee injury he sustained in the accident. Stacey Rhineer, the current indoor WAC champion in the triple jump, will participate in the triple and high jump. Amy Tidwell will compete in the long jump and Alisha Kekacs in the hurdles. Competing in the throwing events will be Chantel Goldsberry in the hammer and Mindy Romig in the javelin. The rest of the team, barring any injuries, will travel to Logan for the Mark Faldmo Invitational. "Anyone else that is healthy and ready to compete will participate in the competition at Utah State," says Jones. "Some of the kids are still traumatized but we just have to work through this. It will take a week or two to get through it."
