SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah track and field team will participate in the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Championships Feb. 18-20, hosted by Air Force Academy. Because the U. does not field an official men's track and field team, it will be difficult for Utah to acquire the points needed to attain a high team finish at the championships.
Head Coach Mike Jones is prepared for lower team scores.
"We don't even have a full mens team, but we're going to see some outstanding individual performances," he says. "The men, members of Utah's cross country team, will participate in some of the distance events. They will run in the mile, the 3,000 and the 5,000 meter events, says Jones. If we can score in all three events, thats pretty good."
On the women's side, senior Stacey Rhineer has been the WACs top performer in the triple jump since January.
"Stacey should do well in the triple jump. I would like to see her become the conference champion," says Jones. "Sophomore Chantel Goldsberry, who broke the school record last week in the 20 lb. weight throw (528.50"), also has a chance to make an impression this weekend."
Overall, Jones realizes the competition level will be very high. We have a lot of good, talented athletes that are working to become elite athletes. We just dont have the maturity yet to dominate.
The NCAA Indoor Championships are scheduled for March 4-6 in Indianapolis, Ind. Senior Jeff Simonich will be competing in the 3,000 meter event. His qualifying time of 7:57.61 is the second fastest collegiate time in that event.
