LOGAN, Utah - While the University of Utah track and field team was in Logan at the USU Motor Wilson Invitational, senior All-American Jeff Simonich was in Boston, Mass., trying to qualify for the NCAA national championships in the 3,000 meter event. Simonich was successful as he finished third in the event, the first collegian across the finish line at the Terrier Classic hosted by Boston University. His time of 7:57 shattered the record previously held at Utah (8:23) and automatically qualified him to compete in the national championships this March in Indianapolis. Head Coach Mike Jones believes Simonich ran one of the fastest times ever produced by an athlete from Utah in the this event. Meanwhile, the rest of the Ute track and field team was having a good day and producing high individuals scores in the non-team scoring event at Utah State.
"We had lots of good high finishes," said Coach Jones. "I was really pleased with the meet. We placed in everything we entered." Freshman Catherine Scalley won the women's long jump with a mark of 17'00.00", while senior Stacey Rhineer placed third in the high jump (5'05.00") and first in the triple jump (39'05.50"). In her first indoor meet of the season, senior Katherina Fatafehi was fifth in the weight throw (51'03.75") and freshman Audrey Kiser placed fifth in the shot put (40'10.50"). Freshman Erianne Allen was second in the 200 meter event (27.23) and freshman Kim Eldredge was third in the 800 meters (2:21.90). Freshman Erika Floyd came in second in the 1,600 meters (5:27.98) and junior Elisha Kekas was third in the 55 meter hurdles (8.43). On the men's side, sophomore Eric Vernon placed fourth in the 1,600 meters (4:23) and in the 3,000 meters, junior Larry Stanely finished first (8:55) with sophomore Adam Stark right behind in second place (8:65).
Utah's next meet is Saturday, Feb. 6, at the Frank Sevign/Husker Invite in Lincoln, Neb. Jeff Simonich will travel to Indianapolis to compete in the Cannon IV Classic hosted by Butler University.
