SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah's track and field team will travel to Logan this Saturday to compete in the Wilson Motor Indoor Open. Head Coach Mike Jones was pleased with his athletes performances last week at the Weber State Invitational and is no doubt looking for the same consistency if not improvements from his athletes.
The top performers from the Weber State Invitational include junior Amy Tidwell who scored in three different events. Tidwell placed third in the 200 meters (26.26), tied for fifth with another Ute, Natalie Durtschi, in the high jump (5' 1/4") and took first place in the 55 hurdles (8.46).
Senior Stacey Rhineer finished first in the triple jump (40' 9 1/4") for Utah and freshman Audrey Kiser finished fourth in the shot put (40' 3 1/4"). Senior Jeff Simonich finished first in the mile run with a time of 4:12.62, the second fastest mile time ever produced by a Utah runner.
Transfer Chris Merkley (8:40.75) had another impressive outing in the 3,000 meters for the Utes. Events are scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m.
Simonich will participate in one of the premier indoor track and field events on the East coast when he travels to Boston University to participate in the Terrier Classic. On Jan. 30th, Simonich will compete in the 3,000 meter event with the goal of shattering the current Utah record and qualify for NCAA National Championships in the process.
