SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah track and field team travels to Pocatello, Idaho this week to compete in the Mountain States Games, their last regular season indoor track meet before the WAC Championships Feb. 19-20. Head coach Mike Jones has opted to enter his distance athletes in shorter distance events to help prepare them for championship competition.
"We're not running in the super long distances," says Jones. "We're going to drop everyone down to a faster race to work on peaking our speed for the WAC Championships."
Senior All-American Jeff Simonich will try to reach the national qualifying mark in the mile in order to compete at the NCAA National Championships. Simonich missed his chance last weekend when he had to pull out of the meet in Indianapolis due to the flu. "This will be his last chance," says Jones. "His strength right now is questionable because of being sick." Senior Stacey Rhineer could also be on her way to the national championships as she currently holds the 13th spot out of the 14 athletes in the triple jump that can qualify to compete at the NCAA's. Last weekend at the prestigious Frank Sevign/Husker Invite in Lincoln, Neb., Rhineer placed third in the triple jump (41'04.50) and 11th in the high jump (5'05.75). Rhineer currently holds the distinction as the WAC's best performer in the women's triple jump.
