LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) - Indiana won a defensive duel against Utah.
William Gladness hit a pair of tiebreaking free throws late in the second half as No. 17 Indiana beat No. 18 Utah 52-49 Tuesday night to reach the final of the Maui Invitational.
"I can't imagine two teams playing harder against one another," said Indiana coach Bob Knight. "Neither team back down. Neither team scored a lot. It was really a hard, tough fought basketball game. There were no cheap points."
The game was close all the way. Indiana's largest lead was seven, and Utah (2-2) never led by more than two. There were seven lead changes and two ties during the final five minutes of the first half.
"I thought both teams played great defense," Utah coach Rick Majerus said. "We both hang our hats on defense."
Indiana (6-0) will play No. 19 Syracuse in Wednesday's championship game. The Orangemen advanced with a 58-46 win over Michigan.
Indiana, with backup Jarrod Odle providing a big lift, built its biggest lead less than five minutes into the second half, but Utah rallied to tie it three more times.
Gladness' free throws put the Hoosiers ahead to stay at 41-39. Indiana's Kirk Haston then blocked a shot by a driving Andre Miller and Gladness scored for a four-point lead.
Luke Recker, who got the important points in Indiana's come-from-behind victory over Kansas State in the opening round, followed with a 3-pointer as time expired on the shot clock.
"We hung in there," Knight said. "It's not something this team did a lot last year."
Neither team could muster much offense against their opponent's tight man-to-man defense. Each team shot only 35 percent from the field.
A.J. Guyton finished with 12 points for Indiana, and Haston had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Hanno Mottola scored 17 points for Utah, while Miller had 12.
