The Utah women's swimming and diving team climbed three spots up the WAC Championship ladder from last season (ninth, 144 points) to place sixth in the competition with 290 points.
In the first day of competition, Heike Kutz, Molly Lauber, Heidi Hausknecht and Lisbeth Jensen placed third in the 400 medley relay. Lauber, Jensen, Hausknecht combined with Amy Jacobson for a fourth-place finish in the 200 free relay. Crystal Gregory finished third in the 1-meter dive qualifying for the NCAA Championships with a score of 500.35. Hausknecht was fourth in the 50 free (23.60) and Jensen was 21st in the 50(24.28). Annika Lundmark was 22nd in the 200 IM (2:09.90).
On day two, the Utah 200 medley relay team finished second with a time of 1:44.76, setting a new Utah record. Kutz, Lauber, Hausknecht and Jacobson comprised the record setting team. Hausknecht swam to a second place finish in the 100 fly qualifying for the NCAA Championships with a time of 54.49. The time breaks the Utah record in the event which Hausknecht set earlier this year at 56.63. Lauber finished third in the 100 breast swimming an NCAA B standard time. It is the second B standard she has swam this season and will await the organizations decision concerning her 1999 Championship participation.
Divers Gregory and Erica Fleming both qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 3-meter dive. Gregory was seventh in the 3-meter with a score of 440.00. She broke the Utah 1-meter dive record yesterday when finished third a score of 500.35 (previously set by Alicia Crus in 1995). Fleming was eight in the 3-meter with 426.05.

Kutz placed 10th in the 100 back, Erin Blundell was 13th in the 100 fly, Melissa Chamberlin was 17th in the 100 breast, Jamie Wayman finished 21st in the 400 IM, Amber Nye was 21st in the 100 back.
In the final day of the tournament, Utah's 400 free relay team of Jensen, Hausknecht, Jacobson and Blundell finished sixth and qualified for the NCAA Championships with a time of 3:28.68. Gregory also qualified for the NCAA's with her third-place finish (500.35) in the platform dive. Heidi Hausknecht was ninth in the 100 free, Chamberlin was 10th in the 200 breast, Annika Lundmark was 24th in the 200 back and Fleming was ninth in the platform dive.
