SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed in a 46-event double dual meet versus Washington today. The teams competed in the short program this morning and held the long program this evening. This is highly uncommon for reasons of athlete fatigue and the repetition of some events.
The Utah men's team, despite being hampered by injuries, defeated Washington twice, 144-109 and 88-78, bringing the men's dual meet record to 4-3. The Ute women's team (2-6) lost 146-84 and 97-69. The Utah men's relays dominated the water winning the 400 free, 200 free and 200 medley relays.
Hampered by the flu, junior Matt Chamberlain won the 200* IM and 100 fly. He also anchored the first-place 400 free relay team. Johan Nystrom won the 100* and 200 freestyle events and was second in the 200* IM. Mike Greene won the 100 and 200 back. Troy Johnson won the 100* was second in the 50 free and Bjoern Olstad was third in the 100 and 200 breast. Both Johnson and Olstad swam with sprained ankles. Dan Schultz swam to second-place finishes in the 1000 and 500* free and Jon Wright was second in the 200 fly and third in the 200 free.
The Ute women's team of Amber Nye, Nicole Lindburg, Annika Lundmark and Callie Robinson won the 400 medley relay. Junior Heidi Hausknecht won the 100* free in the first meet and was second in the 100 free, 50 free and 100 fly in the second meet. Senior Molly Lauber won the 100 breast while Melissa Chamberlain was second in the 200 breast. Erin Blundell was third in the 200 fly and 200 free. "We have been training hard and I am really happy with where we are right now. We had a lot of great times for this point in the season and I am really pleased with our progress.
"Matt (Chamberlain) swam with the flu and came out to win the 200 IM. He really pushed it and made our relay team happen. Heidi (Hausknecht) had a great day. I am really looking for her to succeed at the WAC Championships," Swim Director Dennis Tesch said.
