SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's tennis team tangled with Kansas State, and although it was Valentine's there was no love between the two. The Wildcats downed the Utes at the Eccles Tennis Center, 5-4 in a close match, avenging the Utes win in Kansas last year by the same score. Utah (1-3) did have some bright spots, however.
At No. 1 singles, Megan Payne stated her dominance with a straight-set, 6-1, 6-3 romping of Martina Pospisolova. Payne earned her eighth consecutive victory improving to 8-0 on the season. Molly Sanderson moved into the No. 4 singles slot, the highest she has played in her career, and came back from a 4-1 deficit in the first set to gain a 7-6, 6-3 win over Eva Novotna. Heidi Thomas also cruised for the Utes at No. 6 singles, to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Vesselina Jeliaskova. The Utes other win on the evening came at No. 2 doubles, where Payne-Sanderson handled Novotna-Pampoulova, 8-1.
"I thought Molly (Sanderson) really stepped up and met the challenge for us today. This was a big win for her, one of her best ever," stated Head Coach John Tsumas. "Megan (Payne) just came out and steam-rolled one of the top players in the region. She is playing with a lot of confidence, no coaching was required in her match, she went out and took care of business. The thing that is scary, is that she played sick." "Heidi (Thomas) also played a strong match. She and molly really played some dominant singles."
Utah will next be in action on Friday, February 19, at home against in-state rival Utah State at 5:00 p.m.
