SALT LAKE CITY - Last season, Utah played strong from beginning to end, winning its first 18 games en route to a 30-4 record and a spot in the NCAA Championship game. This season, the Utes (20-4, 10-0 WAC) sputtered at the start, going 5-4. They've won 15 straight games since and are thinking about a return trip to the NCAA Championship game, where they lost to Kentucky last season.
The 12th-ranked Utes have beaten their last four opponents by an average of 29.5 points and haven't had a margin of victory under 10 points during their 15-game winning streak.
"We are playing very well," Utah coach Rick Majerus said. "The younger guys are making strides. On the whole, our team is playing hard and we are moving in a good direction."
Utah goes for its 16th straight wins when it faces San Jose State on Thursday night.
"I don't think we have anything to fear relative to a slippage in our play because we were almost beaten by San Jose here and we know full well they are capable of beating us up there because they have great overall team speed and quickness and good discipline," Majerus said. Utah is led by Andre Miller. The guard had one year of eligibility remaining after he graduated last June but opted to stay at Utah. He's averaging 16 points, 6.3 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game. "Andre is steady as ever and very purposeful in his play," Majerus said.
San Jose State (11-12, 4-6) is coming off its third consecutive loss, a 70-64 overtime defeat at Texas-El Paso on Saturday.
Will Trawick led the Spartans with 22 points and 10 rebounds and teammate R.J. Powell added 14.
The Utes lead the all-time series 12-2. Utah won the first meeting of the season 70-54 in Salt Lake City and has won the last three meetings overall.
The last time the Spartans defeated the Utes at home was 1936.
