QUICKLY: The Utes set a new home winning streak record of 28 straight games (fifth longest in the nation) with their 74-49 victory over Ripon College Saturday night in the Huntsman Center ... the win sends the Utes into WAC play with a 10-4 pre-season record ... Utah starts WAC play against BYU, Saturday, Jan. 9 at 7:35 p.m. in the Huntsman Center ... the game will be broadcast on K-news radio (570) and televised on KJZZ-TV, channel 14 (channel 3 on cable).
NINE UTES MAKE HONOR ROLL: Nine Ute basketball players (seven on scholarship) were named to the Academic Honor Roll for their performance in the classroom fall semester. Scholarship players making the list with at least a 3.0 GPA are HANNO MOTTOLA (3.82 GPA), ADAM SHARP (3.46 GPA), SHANE WILLIS (3.29 GPA), JEREMY KILLION (3.21) PHIL CULLEN (3.05 GPA), GARY COLBERT (3.07 GPA) and BRAD CROCKETT (3.00 GPA). Two walk-on players SID KROMMENHOEK (3.93 GPA) and ZAC DALTON (3.34 GPA) also made the list. Ute coach RICK MAJERUS has had 95 players make the honor roll during his tenure at Utah.
MAJERUS' MARK: Ute coach RICK MAJERUS is in his 10th season at the helm of the Runnin' Utes. Majerus has a 220-63 (.777) mark as Ute coach, the best record of any coach in the modern era of Utah basketball. He is in his 14th year as a major college head coach and has a 319-115 career record. His .735 career winning percentage ranks him seventh in the country among active coaches and 21st all-time. Majerus has won six WAC titles and made six trips to the NCAA Tournament, reaching the "Sweet 16" four times, the "Elite Eight" twice and the "Final Four" once.
UTES AMONG THE TOP TEAMS IN THE 90'S: The Runnin' Utes have been one of the most successful college basketball teams in this decade. Under coach RICK MAJERUS the Utes have posted a 232-75 record for a .756 winning percentage in the 1990's. Going into the season Utah was ranked 8th in the nation in winning percentage and 9th in total victories during the decade.
ANDRE TIME: ANDRE MILLER leads the Ute attack this season. The 6-2, senior guard was a non-qualifier as a freshman but became one of the first athletes to take advantage of a new NCAA rule allowing non-qualifiers an extra year of eligibility if they graduated in four years. Miller received his degree in sociology last June and the Utes are the better for it this season. Andre had an outstanding NCAA Tournament. He was named the MVP of the West Region after the Utes knocked off defending champion Arizona 76-51. In that game Miller became the first player since Magic Johnson to hit for a triple double when he scored 18 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and passed for 13 assists. He also was named to the "Final Four" all-Tournament team as the Utes made it to the NCAA Championship game. For the six NCAA games Andre averaged 16.7 points, 7.5 rebounds and 6.8 assists per game. Currently Andre is leading the Utes in scoring averaging 16.2 points per game. He is also averaging 6.2 rebounds and 5.6 assists for the season. Miller is averaging 5.6 assists to 3.1 turnovers per game.
ANDRE HONORS: ANDRE MILLER is a top 30 candidate for the Wooden Award and a candidate for the Naismith Player of the Year Award. He was also named to most pre-season All-American teams including garnering first team honors on the Associated Press and Playboy Magazine pre-season teams. He is rated by most pre-season publications as one of the top two point guards in the nation. This year he has been named to the all-tournament team at the Maui Invitational and the MVP of the Great Eight Tournament as well as WAC Player of the Week for his games against Rhode Island and Long Beach State when he scored 57 points in the two games.
UTES DOWN RIPON: Utah ended the pre-season with a 74-49 victory over Ripon College of Wisconsin Saturday in the Huntsman Center. Five Utes scored in double figures led by ANDRE MILLER with 16 points. JEREMY KILLION netted 14 points while HANNO MOTTOLA picked up 11 points. ALEX JENSEN put together a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. TONY HARVEY, starting his first game because of a concussion to NATE ALTHOFF, also scored 10 points. The Utes out rebounded Ripon 41-16 and had an excellent night from the free throw line hitting 90 percent of their shots (18-20).
UTES LOOK TO DEFEND WAC CROWN: The Utes go into the 1999 Western Athletic Conference season with four straight WAC (or WAC Division) titles under their belts (1995-98). Utah also won conference crowns in 1993 and 1991. All total, the Utes have won six conference titles in the decade of the 1990's under RICK MAJERUS. During that time Utah has posted a 107-30 (.781) conference record ... Utah will compete in the Pacific Division of the WAC this season. Other teams in the division are BYU, New Mexico, UTEP, San Diego State, Hawai'i, Fresno State and San Jose State. RICK'S REMARKS: "We are still trying to integrate young players and still trying to rebuild. Andre (Miller) is moving forward with his game and Al (Jensen) is playing very competitively. We respect BYU. We tried to recruit a number of those players. We understand our good they are. We know they have a good talent level, are well coached and are very fundamentally sound. (Mark) Bigelow has been called the next (Danny) Ainge and that's true and (Mekeli) Wesley gave us all we could handle last season and he will be nothing but better this year.
UTE NOTES: 10 pre-season wins is tied for the second most pre-season games won under RICK MAJERUS. The 1991-92 Utes also won 10 pre-season games. The 1997-98 and 1990-91 teams both won 11 pre-season games ... the Utes are improving their free throw shooting. UTES IN THE HUNTSMAN CENTER: The Utes have won 28 straight games in the Jon M. Huntsman Center dating back to the 1996-97 season. That is currently the 5th longest home winning streak in the country. It is also a new Ute record for the most consecutive games won in the Huntsman Center. Last year the Utes were 13-0 in the JMHC. Last loss in the building was to Wake Forest (70-59) on Dec. 31, 1996. UP NEXT: The Utes continue WAC play as they travel to San Diego to face San Diego State in a Jan. 16 game. The SDSU game will be televised live on KJZZ-TV. They then move on to Hawaii to face the Rainbows in a Monday, Jan. 18 contest which will be seen as part of the ESPN Big Monday package. The Hawaii game will tipoff at 10 p.m. in Salt Lake.
