Track and Field
As the first of the year rolls around, the attention shifts mainly to the women with the men's team only competing in the distance events. The Ute women finished fifth indoors and seventh outdoors at the Mountain West Conference Track and Field Championships last year. Leading the team this season will be All-American Chantel Goldsberry, who placed 11th overall and was the seventh-highest American in the hammer throw (189') at NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in 2000. She finished third at the MWC Outdoor Championships in the hammer throw. Her toss of 190' 5" broke her old school record by more than seven inches.
The strength of the 2001 track and field team will be the throwers. In addition to Goldsberry, Mindy Wilder finished third in the javelin throw (138' 8"), Alisha Worthley placed 13th in the discus throw (125' 5") and Audrey Kiser was eighth in the shot put (42' 4") at last year's MWC Outdoor Championships. Natasha Eldridge is also part of the quartet.
In the running events, Erianne Allen, Kristy Slade and Alexandria Nash will set the pace. At last year's MWC Indoor Championships, Allen placed fifth in the pentathlon (3,533 points), while Slade was ninth (3,180 points). At the outdoor championships, Allen finished third in the heptathlon (4,932 points) and Slade was sixth (4,576 points), while Nash placed 11th in the triple jump (35' 6.75"). "Goldsberry will lead the team, but she has great support on both the track and field side," says Jones.
The women's team must overcome the graduation of NCAA provisional qualifiers Katherina Gallahar and Elisha Kekacs. Gallahar placed fifth in the hammer throw with a heave of 185' and Kekacs placed fourth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:00.74) and sixth in the 100-meter hurdles (14:24) at the conference outdoor championships last year.
Jones anticipates that junior college All-American April Jackson will fill Kekacs' shoes. Jackson placed second in the nation in the hurdles and fifth in the high jump while competing for Ricks College last year. Supporting Jackson in the high jump will be former Utah prep standout Katie Harrop from Weber High School.
Jameson, Stark and Stoddard, as well as some of the other men's cross country runners, will also run track to help increase their chances for all-conference and All-America honors. Jameson, Stark and Stoddard have solid finishes at last year's conference track championships to build on. At the indoor championships, Jameson finished first in the mile run (4:14.60), while Stark finished 10th in the 3,000 meters (9:03.42). At the MWC Outdoor Championships, Jameson finished second in the 5,000 meters in 14:57.34, Stark placed fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:30.35 and Stoddard was 13th in the 10,000 meters in 34:37.07.
