SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah is making a good showing through the first day of the University of Utah Invitational at the Eccles Tennis Center.
Irini Kotoglou, the No. 2 seed, held her position into the quarterfinals. She drew a first round bye, then beat Veronica Reynosa of Weber State 6-3, 6-3 to advance. No. 4 seeded Cassie Kasteler also advanced in the winner's bracket, earning a bye, then disposing of Tara Rosenweig of WSU, 6-2, 6-2. The Ute pair is joined by Frida Kareld, who followed suit with a bye, then knocked off the fifth seed, Sarah Lowe of Utah State, 6-4, 6-4. The Utes Brooke Wilkinson went 1-1 on the day. She cruised past USU's Whitney Scott, 6-0, 6-3, before falling to No. 3 seeded Therina Steenkamp of the Wildcats, 6-1, 7-5. Jocee Mason from Utah State downed Utah's Emily Watkins, 6-3, 6-2. The top seed, Lenka Zacharova of Weber, then beat Mason, 6-3, 6-0, after a bye. Kasteler and Kareld face off to move to the semifinals tomorrow. Kotoglou awaits Kim Sen from Weber to try and advance. Sen had a bye and won 6-0, 6-3, over the Aggies Johanna Johnson.
The tournament resumes tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
