SALT LAKE CITY - Sophomore Frida Kareld battled past her Utah teammate, sophomore Cassie Kasteler, 5-7, 6-0, 7-5, to advance to the semifinals at the University of Utah Women's Tennis Invitational.
Kareld will face No. 1 seeded Lenka Zacharova for a bid to the finals at 10:30 tomorrow. Junior Irini Kotoglou lost a quarterfinal's match to No. 6 seeded Kim Sen of Weber State, 6-1, 7-5. In the consolation bracket, junior Brooke Wilkinson moved to the semifinals with a pair of victories. She beat Jackie Ellis of Utah State, 6-1, 6-0, then disposed of Veronica Reynosa for the Wildcats, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).
In doubles, Kasteler and Kotoglou walked into the semifinals with a bye and an 8-1 win over Ellis and Amelia Martinez. Wilkinson and Kareld downed USU's Whitney Scott and Holly Anderson, 8-6.
Semifinals matches begin at 9 a.m. at the Eccles Tennis Center tomorrow. The finals will be held at 2 p.m. for singles and 3:30 p.m. for doubles.
