Las Vegas, Nev. - The University of Utah women's volleyball team defeated the UNLV Rebels in four games, 8-15, 15-5, 15-12, 15-11 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nev., on Fri., Oct. 20. Utah improves to 16-3 overall, 7-1 in the MWC. UNLV drops to 2-16 on the season, 2-7 in Mountain West Conference play.
Freshman Kim Turner led Utah with 16 kills for a .206 hitting percentage and eight total blocks. McKelle Stilson and Lenka Urbanova racked up 15 kills each, with Urbanova tying a career-high 17 digs. Katrena Ellett totaled 12 kills and nine digs, while senior Jen Snow-Richards had seven kills and 12 digs. Senior Lucie Turkova posted 60 assists and 10 digs. As a team Utah hit for .200 and racked up 13 total team blocks.
For the Rebels, Patricia Assuncao totaled 21 kills for a .326 hitting percentage. Leiana Oswald had 19 kills, while Amber Graham added 11 kills. Setter Maria Julia Goes posted 58 assists and 20 digs in the match. UNLV hit for .184 and added 14 total team blocks.
"It was a typical conference road match," said Head Coach Beth Launiere. "It wasn't an easy environment to play in and our number one passer went down. This match was a total team effort and we found a way to win, really against all odds. They've got a lot of talent and this is a tough place to play. We came prepared and we got into a situation we needed to respond to, and we did."
UP NEXT: Utah will match-up with San Diego State on Sat., Oct. 21 in San Diego, Calif. Utah is back at home on Fri., Oct. 27, when they take on the Rams of Colorado State at 7:00 p.m. On Sat., Oct. 28, Utah will face MWC opponent Wyoming at Crimson Court at 7:00 p.m. Utah will match-up again with BYU, in Provo, Utah, at 7:00 p.m. (MST) on Fri., Nov. 3. Utah tavels to Colorado Springs, Colo. on Fri., Nov. 10, taking on the Air Force Falcons at 7:00 p.m. (MST). On Sat., Nov. 11, Utah will face MWC opponent New Mexico in Albuquerque, N.M. at 7:00 p.m. (MST). The Utes will travel to Fort Collins, Colo. on Nov. 15-18 to compete for the Mountain West Conference Tournament crown. On Nov. 22, Utah will face Weber State in Ogden, Utah at 7:00 p.m. (MST). The Utes end their regular-season at home with a match against non-conference opponent Denver on Sat., Nov. 25, at 1:00 p.m. (MST).
