Provo, Utah--The Utah baseball team dropped its first game of a three-game series against Brigham Young in a 5-2 contest today. The loss brings Utah's season record to 13-15 and drops it to 4-3 in the Mountain West Conference. The Utes scored two runs on eight hits with two errors, while BYU won the game scoring five runs on eight hits with one error.
Brigham Young scored all five runs in its victory in the bottom of the fourth inning onthree singles and back-to-back doubles. Utah remained scoreless until the ninth inning when they scored two runs on a pair of singles and a sacrifice fly . The Utes however were not able to overcome the three run deficit.
Second baseman Adam Castleton hit 2-for-3 in the game scoring one run. Third baseman Mike Goff was 2-for-4 at the plate hitting one double.
Jared Cavaness earns the loss for Utah. The senior pitched all eight innings, his third complete game of the season. He faced 31 batters, gave up eight hits and struck out two batters.
The Utes and the Cougars resume play tomorrow at 1:00 p.m., in Provo, Utah.
