SALT LAKE CITY - Megan Payne-Dorny routed No. 58 Eline Chiew at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 7-6(3), but the University of Utah women's tennis team didn't have enough fire power against No. 41 Brigham Young, as Payne-Dorny picked up the lone Ute victory.
Payne-Dorny prevailed for the first time in three matches against Chiew this season, but BYU won in straight-sets in seven of eight wins.
Linn Ronnberg lost a three-set match at No. 5 to Liza Khoudoiarova, 3-6, 6-1, 7-6(2), to halt the Utes' hopes of an upset.
Utah led in two of three doubles matches before the Cougars took command and closed out the match convincingly.
"I lost to Eline (Chiew) twice this year and went in with a different strategy today," said Ute captain Payne-Dorny. "I was able to execute my game plan this match. I felt like I wanted it more than her."
"As a team, we had confidence going into the match. The close matches didn't go our way," said Payne-Dorny. "I feel we have a good team, we just didn't get it done."
