SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's tennis (7-10) team finished the regular season in impressive fashion throttling Southern Utah 9-0.
Utah won every match in straight-sets. No Thunderbird accounted for more than three games in any set.
Megan Payne-Dorny and Frida Kareld didn't relinquish a game at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, respectively, beating Carolina Fernandez and Andi Moreno, 6-0, 6-0 each. Cassie Kasteler bombed Shaland Moreno 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2. Linn Ronnberg surrendered only two games in her match at No. 4 going 6-2, 6-0, while Brooke Wilkinson cruised at No. 5 over Melinda Francom, 6-2, 6-3. Emily Watkins picked up her first win in her first singles match at Utah over Ashlee Berge, 6-3, 6-1.
The Utes were equally as impressive in doubles. Kasteler/Wilkinson outslugged Romero/Gleason, 8-3 at No. 1. Dorny/Ronnberg crushed Fernandez/Moreno, 8-0 in No. 2 play, and Kareld/Watkins topped Francom/Berge 8-5 at No. 3 in the tightest match of the afternoon.
"This match was important for our confidence after our road losses," said Payne-Dorny. "We've been practicing hard for the Mountain West Conference tournament. If we strengthen our doubles, we have a good shot against our potential first round match against Nevada-Las Vegas."
