LAS VEGAS - The Fifth seeded University of Utah women's tennis team lost 5-0 to No. 4 Nevada-Las Vegas in the Mountain West Conference Tournament opener.
No. 65 nationally, UNLV won each singles match in straight-sets to advance to the semifinals, sending Utah into the consolation bracket to face eighth-seeded Air Force tomorrow at 10 a.m.
In the first slot, No. 63 Megan Payne-Dorny fell to 28th ranked Katarina Malec, 6-2, 6-2. Malec is the only MWC No. 1 singles player Dorny failed to defeat on the season. Veronica Goude beat freshman Cassie Kasteler, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2. Frida Kareld dropped a 6-2, 6-3 match at No. 3 to Marianne Bakken, while Irini Kotoglou was ousted6-0, 6-2 by Urska Radanovic. The decisive match came at No. 6, where Amy Hadziosmanovic defeated Anna Stechert, 7-5, 2-0 retired.
