SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team finishes the 2000 season with a 25-28 record going 15-15 in the Mountain West Conference to finish fourth in the league. Utah defeated Air Force in the final game of a three-game series 8-3 to round out regular season play. The Utes scored eight runs on 11 hits with three errors. Despite giving up 13 hits, the Ute defense kept Air Force to three runs and one error.
Air Force led the game scoring a run in the top of the third on a solo homer by designated hitter Brian Gornick. The Utes rallied back however scoring three runs on a home run by catcher Donald Hawes*his 10th of the season*in the bottom of the inning. The Falcons battled to score runs in the fifth and sixth innings, but Utah reclaimed its lead scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth on three singles and doubles by Hawes and second baseman Adam Castleton. The Utes scored their final run in the bottom of the seventh on a solo homer by shortstop Jake Shortino.
Hawes led the day for Utah going 2-for-4 four and scoring two runs and three RBI. Castleton was also 2-for-4 with one run and two RBI. The sophomore also hit a triple in the game and earned one stolen base.
Jason Wylie earns the win for Utah pitching 2.1 innings of the game. He faced 10 batters and allowed only one hit. Senior Brandon Page started for Utah pitching the first 4.2 innings. He faced 23 batters, gave up two runs and struck out three.
Next up, the Utes travel to Las Vegas, Nev. May 17-20 to compete in the inaugural Mountain West Conference Championship hosted by UNLV. The Utes go into the tournament as the fourth cede and will battle No. 3 cede Brigham Young in the first round of the tournament.
