Track Squads Impressive Cardinal Invitational

PALO ALTO, Calif.-- A few select Ute athletes tried to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor National Championships on Friday at the Cardinal Invitational.
A heartbreaker in the 5,000 meters had senior Travis Hildebrand just two places and one second away from a provisional qualifying mark. Hildebrand placed 30th with a time of 14 minutes, 7.38 seconds. Senior Chris Merkley, who already has a provisionally qualifying time but was seeking an automatic berth to the championships, placed 38th with a time of 14:11.96. The automatic qualifying time to beat was 13:48. Sophomore Teren Jameson was close behind in 40th place, running the race in 14:13.56.
Senior Elisha Kekacs placed first in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.36, but was unsuccessful in her attempt to qualify for nationals. The time for her to beat for a provisional qualifying mark was 59.20 seconds. Audrey Kiser and Chantel Goldsberry placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the shot put. Kiser threw 41' 8,75", matching her best throw all season, and Goldsberry threw 39' 8.00". Goldsberry also competed in the hammer throw and placed third (172' 8"). Goldsberry and Kiser also failed to qualify.
Senior Johanna Nielsen will return to Stanford next week to try to qualify for the NCAA's in the 10,000 meters on May 12 in the Cardinal Qualifier.
Utah will host the Utah Collegiate Classic, a last chance qualifiers meet, on Wednesday May 10 before the Mountain West Conference Championships May 17-20 in Provo, Utah.
