No. 24 Ranked Utes Undefeated In MWC Play

The No. 24 ranked University of Utah women's basketball team shut-down the Wyoming Cowgirls, 54-48, in Mountain West Conference action on Sat., Jan. 20 at the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The Utes improve to 16-2 overall, 5-0 in the Mountain West Conference. Wyoming drops to 8-8 overall, 0-3 in MWC play.
Utah led at the half, 36-26 and edged the Cowgirls 34-30 on the boards. The Utes outscored Wyoming 38-16 off points in the paint and 14-4 in points off turnovers.
For the Utes, junior Lauren Beckman scored 19 points and nine rebounds. Beckman went 7-of-11 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free-throw line. Senior Amy Ewert totaled 11 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals. Teammate Kristina Andersen added 10 points, shooting 3-of-6 from the field, 1-of-1 from behind the arc and 3-of-4 from the free-throw line. Utah went 21-of-48 (44 percent) from the field, 1-of-12 (8 percent) from three-point range and 73 percent (11-of-15) from the free-throw line.
Wyoming saw two players score in double-figures. Jessica Gibbs came off the bench to lead the Cowgirls with 11 points and seven boards. Teammate Lisa McCann scored 10 points, while Shelby Hoffman tallied nine points. The Cowgirls shot 36 percent from the field (19-of-53), 15 percent from behind the arc (2-of-13) and 73 percent from the free-throw line (8-of-11).
"We certainly struggled in the second half today," said Head Coach Elaine Elliott. "I thought Wyoming played really well, they played hard, they hit big shots and tough shots. I just thought we made some real gutsy plays near the end to pull the win out and I'm proud of the team for that." said Elliott.
Utah will face Brigham Young at home on Sat., Jan. 27 at 3:07 p.m. On Sat., Feb. 3, the Utes will travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., to match-up with the Air Force Falcons at 2:00 p.m. Utah will host San Diego State on Thurs., Feb. 8, at 7:00 p.m. and UNLV on Sat., Feb. 10, at 3:00 p.m. On Thurs., Feb. 15, the Utes travel to Laramie, Wyo., to face the Cowgirls at 7:00 p.m. Utah will meet Colorado State on Sat., Feb. 17 in Fort Collins, Colo., at 2:00 p.m.
