PROVO, Utah - No. 2 Utah defeated No. 7 seed New Mexico in three games, 30-15, 30-16, 30-19, in the third match of the 2001 Mountain West Conference Championship.
With the victory, Utah picked-up its sixth straight 20th win season (20-5) and advanced to the semifinal match of the tournament for the third straight year. Silva Strzinkova led the Utes, hitting .600 and finishing with 14 kills. Adrianne Drake recorded a match-high 10 blocks and 10 digs to finish with a double-double. Teammate McKelle Stilson added nine blocks to help the Utes to 19.5 total team blocks. Kim Turner was also instrumental in the Utah attack, with 11 kills and a .412 attack percentage.
Utah's blocking stopped the Lobo attack, holding New Mexico to a three-game -.075 attack percentage. Malena Thompson led the Lobos with a .125 attack percentage on nine kills, while Anna Reines recorded nine kills.
Utah faces the winner of the BYU vs. Wyoming match at 7 p.m. Friday.
