SALT LAKE CITY -
The Utah swimming team signed Amy Barefield (Mont.), Meghan Fleisch (Utah), Tanner Folster (Utah) and Jonathan Larsen (Calif.) to national letters of intent during the early signing period. The four high school seniors will join the Utes next season.
Head coach Mike Litzinger is pleased with the new signees and what they bring to the program. "Our early signing class is a well-rounded group that will walk through the door and help Utah take that step towards the top of the Mountain West."
Amy Barefield hails from Bozeman, Mont. Barefield prepped at Bozeman High School and swam for the Bozeman Barracudas club squad. She is expected to compete in the sprint free and back events at Utah. Barefield was a finalist in the 50 and 100 free at the 2001 Speedo Northwest Sectional Championship. Barefield was also a member of the 2001 Montana all-state squad in the 50, 100 and 200 free.
"Amy's extremely athletic," states Litzinger. "Her athleticism fits right into our sprint philosophy at Utah. She has developed a great work ethic at the club level, and is well prepared to grow as a college swimmer."
Meghan Fleisch, a Salt Lake City native, swam for Brighton High School and the Cottonwood Heights club squad. She was a 2001 Utah state finalist in the 200 and 500 free. Fleisch will compete in the distance free and back events for the Utes.
"I am very excited about Meghan's future at Utah, and her potential in the MWC," says Litzinger. "She will round out our distance program, and be a factor in our bid for a conference championship."
Tanner Folster, from Mapleton, Utah, swam for Springville High School and the Springville Aquatics club team. He will compete in the free and back events with the Utes. Folster was the 2000-01 Utah state high school champion in the 100 free. He was also the 2001 Utah Sprint Swimmer of the Year.
"Tanner is a well-rounded athlete that is ready to explode on the college level," says Litzinger. "His size and versatility, along with his attention to detail, make him an immediate asset."
Jonathan Larsen is from Stockton, Calif, where he attended Lincoln High School and swam for the Tiger Aquatics club squad. He will compete in the sprint free events with the Utes. Larsen was a 2001 Speedo West Sectional finalist in the 50 and 100 free.
"Jon's physical presence and athleticism will make him a contender in the sprint free events," says Litzinger. "He will also help bolster our relays, which will be key in our run for a future MWC championship."
