SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Chris Burgess had a career-high 22 points and 11 rebounds as Utah cruised past Troy State 87-56 Saturday night.
Burgess made 11-of-13 shots as Utah (4-3) shot 56 percent from the field and out-rebounded the Trojans 39-23. The Ute center, who transferred from Duke after his sophomore season, has been hampered by injuries and high expectations at Utah but finally dominated Saturday.
Nick Jacobson, who had 18 points, and Trace Caton each made four 3 pointers as the Utes were 12-of-21 from beyond the arc.
Lamayn Wilson paced the Trojans with 15 points but connected on just 5 of 18 from the field. Troy State (3-3) has now lost two in a row after winning three straight.
Caton made three 3-pointers in a 18-2 run that turned a 48-35 game into a 66 37 Utah lead with 9:58 to play.
The Trojans' first seven field goals were 3-pointers and they led 21-19 with 11:41 left in the first half. But the long jumpers stopped falling and the Utes continued to pound it in to 6-foot-10, 240-pound Burgess.
Burgess made 8-of-9 shots, most from right under the basket, and scored 16 points in the first 13:34 of the game.
When the Trojans switched to a zone defense to stop the Utah inside game, the Utes executed their own long-range barrage. Jacobson hit two of Utah's four 3-pointers in a 14-2 half-ending run that put the Utes up 43 27.
Troy State went exclusively with the outside game. The Trojans didn't record their first 2-point field goal until midway through the first half and they attempted their first free throw with 18:52 remaining in the game.
The game was the first meeting between the two teams.
