THIS WEEK: The Utah swimming and diving teams will travel to Oklahoma City, Okla. for the 2001 Mountain West Conference Swimming and Diving Championships, Feb. 14-17. The diving competition will commence on Feb. 14 at 10:00 a.m. with the preliminary round of the men's 1-meter springboard. The swimming events will be underway at 6:00 p.m. with the 200-yard freestyle and medley relays.
The Utes will face seven other conference schools including the reigning men's and women's conference champions, Brigham Young. The championships will feature six Olympians and three competitors in the U.S. Olympic Trials, including Utah's Hiedi Hausknecht.
UTES TO WATCH FOR: Senior Heidi Hausknecht, is currently ranked No. 17 in the nation in the 100-meter butterfly (55.07) and No. 23 in the 50-meter freestyle (23.30). She holds the top time in the Mountain West Conference this season in both events, and will look to defend her titles in Oklahoma City. Hausknecht is also ranked in the world in short course meters at No. 60 in the 100-meter butterfly (1:01.46) and No. 73 in the 50-meter freestyle (26.00).
The Utah relay team of Hausknecht, Sarah Norton, Erin Blundell and Kristen Kaiser is ranked No. 48 in the nation in the 400-meter freestyle relay (3:31.46).
Freshman Kaiser broke the school record in the 400-meter IM with a time of (4:35.44) at the Colorado State Invitational, earlier this season.
Divers Jill Comins and Sterling Richards qualified for the NCAA Zone Diving Competition in the 3-meter and 1-meter events, respectively.
"I am truly looking forward to the Mountain West Conference Championships...it is the culmination of a full season of training, and it certainly is the meet we have been focusing on as a team. Unlike many of the teams in our conference, we have not rested during the dual-meet season. It is always nice to have a great dual-meet season, and fast swims during that period...but all records and swims are thrown out at the Championships. This is the place where you and your performances will stand alone," states an enthusiastic Mike Litzinger.
