OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The University of Utah swimming and diving teams finished fifth at the Mountain West Conference Championships. The women's final score was 420, while the men posted 310. Brigham Young won both the men's and women's competitions for the second year in a row.
On the women's side, Kristen Kaiser came in third-place in the 1650-yard freestyle (17:10.28) and Heidi Hausknecht took second in the 100-yard freestyle (49.66) which broke the school record along with qualifying her for the NCAA Championships with a B standard time. Amber Nye was tenth in the 200-yard backstroke (2:05.83) which broke a school record, Jamie Wayman was right behind her in 11th-place (2:06.16). Sarah Norton was fifth in the 100-yard freestyle (51.27) and Melissa Chamberlin finished ninth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:19.07) which also broke the school record. The relay team of Hausknecht, Norton, Rebecca Gerber, and Erin Blundell swam to a third place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:27.81) setting a new school record.
For the men, Magnus Lofgren finished fourth in the 1650-yard freestyle (15:59.36), and Curt Johnson was sixth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:04.30). Brendon Bray (1:52.89) and David Fleisch (1:52.94) were ninth and tenth in the 200-yard breaststroke.
Utah divers took to the platform on Saturday, Jill Comins took third in the women's competition with 309.25 points and James Thompson was fifth for the men with 384.70 points.
Both Utah teams had an amazing conference competition. The Utes set seven school records over the weekend and claimed three individual event titles. Every member of both teams had 100% lifetime best times in their respective events.
"In 14 years of coaching, I have never seen a team swim as hard or as well for seven sessions of a meet. They were asked to step-up in the morning then come back again that evening and swim faster, they did just that. The enthusiasm and spirit that both teams displayed is what every coach dreams about. This was truly an amazing meet for all of us," stated Coach Litzinger at the close of the competition.
