SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Catcher/designated hitter Chris Shelton was honored as the Player of the Year and third baseman Mike Westfall was named the Freshman of the Year when the Mountain West Conference announced its 2001 all-conference baseball teams and postseason award winners on Tuesday.
Shelton, a junior from Salt Lake City, led Utah to a 26-27 overall record and a 14-16 conference mark. Shelton leads the conference with a .734 slugging percentage, 59 runs scored and 149 total bases entering the conference tournament. He also ranks in the top five in the league in batting average (.374), home runs (16), RBI (57), doubles (21), hits (76) and on-base percentage (.449).
Westfall, a freshman from Scottsdale, Ariz., started 51 of Utah's 53 games and hit .343, a number that ranked third on the team and 11th in the league. Westfall connected for 19 doubles and eight homers in his debut season with the Utes.
Utah, which tied for third place in the conference regular season standings, had six student-athletes named to the all-conference team. Shelton was joined on the first team by first baseman Nate Weese, a junior from Bountiful, Utah, and pitcher Ryan Bailey, a junior from Chula Vista, Calif. Weese is hitting .298 and ranks second in the Mountain West in RBI (62) and fourth in home runs (13). Bailey is third in the MWC in wins with a 7-5 record and has the sixth-best opponents' batting average (.284).
On the second team, Westfall was accompanied by outfielder Sam Swenson, a senior from South Jordan, Utah, and junior pitcher Travis Palmer from Sandy, Utah. Swenson has the sixth-best batting average in the MWC (.361) and is fourth in home runs (13) and fifth in RBI (50). Palmer has the eighth-best ERA in the conference (5.77) and the sixth-most wins with a 5-4 mark.
