SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah swimming and diving team announced on Tuesday that Rachel Degener has been named the new diving coach.
Degener, a native of Kaysville, Utah, and a graduate of Davis High School, will join the staff of head coach Mike Litzinger for the upcoming season. Degener's coaching resume includes a stint as an assistant diving coach at the University of Minnesota, assistant head coach with the Salt Lake Aquatic Program, and head coach with a youth program in Eden Prarie, Minn.
Degener attended BYU from 1996-1998 where she was a U.S. Junior Olympic national qualifier in 1996, and a 1998 WAC finalist in the one and three meter platform events. After competing at BYU for three years, Degener transferred to the University of Minnesota in 1999 and graduated in 2000 with a degree in Kineseology. In her two years at Minnesota, Degener was a five time Big Ten finalist on the one, three and 10 meter platform events.
"I am excited to be at the University of Utah," said Degener. "There is a lot of potential in our program, and we are planning to leave no stone unturned in helping Utah swimming and diving rise to the top of the Mountain West Conference."
Second-year head swimming coach Mike Litzinger said of Degener, "Rachel is certainly the coach to take us into the future. She is well organized, enthusiastic, and her vision of excellence is right in line to what we expect of our program."
