Salt Lake City - The No. 21 ranked University of Utah women's volleyball team went undefeated in their own Utah Classic Tournament this weekend. The Utes defeated the Texas Tech Red Raiders in four games, 30-15, 23-30, 30-28, 30-24 at Crimson Court on Sat. Sept. 1. Utah improves to 3-0 overall, 0-0 in the MWC. Texas Tech falls to 1-2 on the season.
Senior Alisa Geddes led the Utes with her second double-double of the season. She racked up a season-best 18 kills for a .317 hitting percentage, 13 digs and two total blocks. Geddes took charge offensively as she notched 20.0 points in the match. Junior Sylva Strzinkova had her first double-double of her career and posted 11 kills, 13 digs and racked up 12.5 points in the match. Senior McKelle Stilson added 10 kills and five blocks, while junior Katrena Ellett totaled eight kills and five blocks. Sophomore Kim Turner racked up seven kills, 10 total blocks and was responsible for 13.0 of Utah's 82.0 points. As a team Utah posted a .301 hitting percentage and 17.0 total team blocks.
For the Red Raiders, Melissa McGehee totaled 17 kills and nine digs. Yolanda Cumbess notched 14 kills, while teammate Skydra Orzen totaled 50 assists and 10 digs. Texas Tech hit for just .098, adding 4.0 total team blocks.
"I was really happy the way our team responded to how aggressive they (Texas Tech) were," said Head Coach Beth Launiere. "It was a real test for us and we competed harder and came together. We played well as a team and I challenged them to be more aggressive in the third game of the match. I think that made the difference for us."
Utah had three players selected to the Utah Classic all-Tournament team. They were: Alisa Geddes, Sylva Strzinkova and tournament MVP Kim Turner.
UP NEXT: Utah travels to Tucson, Ariz. to participate in the Arizona Tournament on Sept. 6-7, at the McKale Center. The Utes will take on the No. 6 ranked Arizona Wildcats on Thurs., Sept. 6 at 7:00 p.m. On Fri., Sept. 7, Utah will match-up with Louisville. Match-time is TBA.
